Both nickel and cobalt prices have been fluctuating after entering 2007. Several reasons attribute to the bull market: booming demand, supply tightness led by policy adjustment in resource rich countries, of course investment funds are always the frequenters in commodity markets. Rising prices stimulate the supply, while the consumers have kept coping with the high cost, adjusting the production structure or searching for the cheaper raw materials. The booming production of nickel pig iron in China meet the demand from some stainless steel producers, while nickel consumption in battery and plating industry have been constrained to some degree. Cobalt consumption, which had experienced high price though have not been affected drastically, but the uncertainty from resource rich African countries still dominate the market. Furthermore, high nickel and cobalt prices have inevitably stimulated the substitution in their downstream industries.
